Weight Loss Food – Your Recipe Rocks

Posted by Roma On June - 28 - 2008

I gained about 21 kgs during my pregnancy. After my daughter was born the weight-loss anxiety began. I couldnt go on a crash diet as the baby was feeding. My mom told me to start eating broken wheat or dalia instead of rice , especially at night. I totally substituted rice with broken wheat in my diet for about 2 months and lost 7 kgs flat! I also used to walk and exercise but the dalia worked wonders for me. I told a couple of friends about this routine and they also lost weight with this substitution.

I have selected Ranjini’s recipe for dalia upma for the Your recipe rocks event. Her style of preparing the upma is very similar to how my mom makes it except that mom roasts the dalia instead of blanching it. However, the final dish tastes just as good. Thanks Ranjini for sharing your recipe with us.

Dalia is a perfect substitute for rice in any pulao or biryani. It can even be eaten with dal and sabzi. Once its mixed with curries, it tastes exactly like rice. Interestingly the cooking procedure is also the same for dalia and rice. So whats the difference? The calories reduce and the fiber nutrition goes up. Its excellent for digestion as well and can be given to babies over the age of one year.

In this recipe I used ordinary broken wheat as I had a pack at home already. If you go shopping please pick up sprouted broken wheat rawa like Ranjini has used as that is more nutritious.
Thanks to Madhu for hosting this unique event – Your Recipe Rocks. Hope the rice shortage problem will soon be overcome.

Rajani of Vegetarian in Me has given me the Yummy Blog Award. Thanks so much Rajani for thinking my blog to be yummy. I am actually a huge fan of her recipes. Somehow, each recipe she selects seems to be exactly the thing I want to make.

The recipient of this award is expected to do the following :
1) Mention what the award stands for
“This award is given to the blog with most yummy recipes/photos”

2) The recipient should quote their favorite desserts which they have eaten or made themselves

  1. Rasmalai
  2. Creme caramel
  3. Red carrot halwa
  4. Malai Sandwich

Wow! I enjoyed this part but it has made me very hungry!

3) Finally, I should pass this award onto 4 other food bloggers. Well, its very difficult to choose 4 as there are so many blogs I really like. Anyway, here are the recipients of this award :

1) Divya of Dil se

2) Asha – foodie’s hope

3) Happy Cook of My Kitchen Treasures

4) Madhuram of Egglesscooking

Congratulations to all!

Hi Roma, I love dalia!! of all the things!! and its been ages since I had it! think I am going to get a packet. how old is your baby now? you know after my daughter wasborn I lost 10 kilos in the first month.my mom had put me on a breasfeeding mum’s diet of green leaves, legumes, fenugreek, wheat, onions, fruits and garlic (but no ghee)… all stuff great for mother’s milk as well as I suppose losing weight. You know I initially planned to put a lot of baby food etc… motherhood stuff on my blog – cos I was really looking out for recipes earlier and couldnt find much on the net especially catering to indian mothers. i love the fact that you’re categorising and yes you are inspiring me to put down my experiences as well!!!!! great job there.

Madhu, I also didnt know about Sprouted Dalia. Got to know from my neighbor who used to give it to her one year old son. It sounds like a good option. Will probably try it next time.

Asha, thanks so much. Hugs to you too :)

Rajani, my daughter is 1 year 4 months old. The post-natal diet is also something I have been wanting to categorize on the blog. It will really help pregnant ladies to find a diet chart that can help them eat nutritious and lose weight at the same time, post delivery.

  6. I am not familiar with dalia – I will have to look for it. I am sure my Indian shop will have it.

Congrats for the award, you totally deserve it! That’s a good tip on losing weight, I’ll have to remember it, thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys. Do let me know if it works for you too. Eating broken wheat at night instead of rice works wonders for health as the fiber pulls out the dirt inside our stomach and throws it out.

    Hi,

I saw sites mentioning high calorie value for broken wheat . Why is that ?

Even i assumed this has less cal when compared to rice and was about to try but was disappointed seeing the calorie count

The following site mentions Broken wheat has 527 cal

Let me know your comments on this.

    Hi Bhunu,

Its a good question. Thanks for bringing this up.

Broken wheat is high in fiber. Hence it gives you a sense of fullness on eating a smaller quantity. Moreover, the stomach will have to work more to digest it leading to burning of more calories.

Here is another link that recommends eating high-fiber foods like broken wheat for weight loss :

    http://food.sify.com/fullstory.php?id=14522774

All high calorie foods are not bad for the body. In fact all calories are not even the same. If you eat a cup of chikoo fruit you take in as many calories as 3 teaspoons of Ghee. Yet, its better you eat the fruit than the ghee. Thats because hi-fiber food is good for the body and the nutrition received post absorption aids metabolism and active functioning of the body.
