Long Live the Shelf! – Round up
Long Live the Shelf!
With a busy life style and changing trends we all want things that can be made and eaten quickly. I can see the increasing focus these days on instant mixes, jams, chutneys, etc; that can be used as an accompaniment with main course whenever we are too tired to whisk something up. There are companies that have branded this idea and have grown really big in the business. Naturally, the mixes made at home are a lot tastier. Its a one-time effort and the resultant powder or paste can save your time all month!
Here is an event where I would like to gather some such dishes which have a long shelf-life.
Regulations :
(1) Please make a mix which has a shelf life of at least one week (with or without refrigeration)
It could be any of the following :
- To go with Rotis : Chutneys or powders which taste well with chappatis or parathas. Useful when you dont have time to make a sabzi.
- To go with Rice : Powders / pastes such as Puliyogre paste, Biryani powder, etc; that can be instantly mixed with rice and eaten when you dont have a curry.
- To go with Idlies / Dosas : Powders and instant chutney mixes that go well with Idly/ Dosa
- To make an Instant Curry : Powders which can be boiled to instantly make curries. For ex : powders to make Majjige Huli (curds curry), rasam, etc; Please ensure the mix is instant. There should not be much work in getting the final dish ready.
- To make Sweets : Powders or pastes that can be used to instantly make sweets or any kind of dessert.
- To go with Bread : Jams and Jellies that can be preserved and had anytime with Bread or buns
- To go with Snacks : Sauces, Dips or chutneys that taste well with snacks. For ex : Tamarind chutney can be easily preserved for a month in the fridge and had any time with dhoklas or pakodas.
(2) Please mention the approximate shelf life of your dish (with or without refrigeration) and which of the above categories your dish falls under.
(3) Please link your post back to the event announcement. Feel free to use the logo in your post.

I know what you are thinking. We have roti but no sabzi, we have rice but no curry, what kind of a meal is this?
Well, thats the way most of us eat on certain busy days and its always handy to have quick add-ons.
Long live the shelf!

Diet Delight – A comic strip
People can have hour-long discussions on the topic of dieting. I feel all of us have tried to shed that excess weight at some point in life. Being a foodie I have always found it very difficult to keep away from yummy food. At the same time, I have been advised to lose weight by the doctors due to high cholesterol. So once a week what I do is, I just eat something that will taste as good as the yummy stuff others eat and at the same time has a calorie count that keeps me happy. Hopefully, my cholesterol level and weight will come down. My husband is not going to get my cholesterol checked for the next one year, in case its normal least I start binging again!
This is my entry to Lakshmi’s comic strip event, ‘Weight Loss – Impossible‘ Thanks for introducing me to ToonDoo.

Vegetable Carving
For the longest time Chefs have striven to make their food more appealing to the eyes. For if it looks good it tastes good. Yes, appearances are deceptive but did you know that they set a mood for appreciating what comes next?
We eat our food with all our senses without even realizing it. When you see something looking good you instantly want to sample it. Its like me drooling over all your blog pics! When you bake a cake and the aroma spreads all over, it makes your neighbors mouth water. Similarly, when you pick up a piece of cake or pie and it breaks before it reaches your mouth you decide its not that great. A more common example will be the roti or chappati. Have you noticed that when you cant break it with 2 fingers and labor over a stretchy piece you will most probably think its tasteless even before eating? When you buy a sizzler, you want to hear that sizzle else its not good, right? Here I have enumerated the use of your senses : eyes, nose, ear and touch that you have used to taste your food and we always feel its our tongue that doing all the job. Yes, finally the tongue decides, no doubt but what about the hidden senses?
Here is an event to make us look at our food in a different way. So pick up your carving tools and sculpt out your fruits & veggies. Some of the commonly used tools are shown in the picture. They are available in the market as a part of a ‘Garnish Kit’. Once you start using the kit its very addictive. You might not have time to make a dish but you will definitely squeeze out some time to dress it up!

1 : Pastry Bag
Different tips can be used to produce different shapes from mashed fruits/vegetables. Round tip for smooth shapes, star-shaped tips for ridged shapes and a flat tip for wide strips.
2 : Peeler
Is usually used to peel outer skin of vegetables but can also be used to create decorative strips to make bows and curls.
3 : Peel Stripper
Is used to pull off strips of peel or flesh. It allows you to make one long groove at a time. Lemon / Orange rind spirals used in cocktails are usually made using this tool.
4 : Zester
Tool used for removing the zest from lemons and other citrus fruits. You can also use it for making wavy stripes on the outer surface of vegetables.
5 : Melon Baller
To scoop out large or half spheres from melons,cucumbers, and carrots. Also used to scoop out seeds from tomatoes, kiwis, etc;
6 : Round Cutters
With smooth or ridged edges to cut out perfect circles of fruit or vegetable slices.
These are the commonly available tools however you dont need to have all of the above to create a great sculpture. Even a knife and peeler can work wonders!
Regulations :
1) This event focuses on making the food look creative. You can create it as a part of a recipe or just a stand alone sculpture.
2) Not necessary that the final result should look like a person, animal or object. It can just be anything that looks beautiful and creative.
3) Please feel free to use the ‘Melon Basket’ logo above.
4) Please link your post back to the event announcement
