I love anything with the word ‘chocolate’ in it. I am always hungry for chocolate and keep looking for ways in which I can add some to my ‘diet’. While surfing around the net I found this easy recipe to bake brownies by Nags. I couldn’t wait much longer to try it out. My girls and I got together this afternoon and got this easy bake brownie out of our oven, safe and sound. Well, not for long because soon after the pictures the brownies vanished. Continue reading »
Now I know why this cake is called Devil’s Food Cake. It’s simply sinful ! It’s made with a combination of rich molten chocolate and butter. The taste of this cake is determined by the quality of cooking chocolate used. It can be as delicious as you like. I suggest, you go for the best brand of dark chocolate available near your place. When we are sinning anyway, might as well go all the way Continue reading »
What wouldnt I do to eat some chocolate? These days I am playing the strict hypocrite, the character who doesnt allow chocolates inside the house as daughter eats too many of them but secretly nurses the dream of eating some herself. I think these chunks are a great substitute for regular chocolates. Whats more? You can even make it on festivals for prasad and the kids will love the new variation to the regular burfis. You can also make this any time you dont have Khoya, condensed milk or any milk at all. You can use the milk powder stored in your refrigerator to quickly make this dessert. Continue reading »
I had a pleasant lunch with a friend on Friday afternoon. It was an unplanned meal so my menu was within limitations of what was available in my fridge – one radish and some brinjals. I decided on radish sambar and Baigan ki sabzi. I have never made brinjals when I’ve invited someone over for lunch or dinner as most people dont eat brinjals. Thankfully my friend likes them and she enjoyed the sambar as well. I did not go out of the way to make something special. So I thought “Ok, lunch is the usual so why not make the dessert interesting?” Continue reading »
Yes! I saved two bananas. They were very ripe and were fast approaching their expiry when I decided to use them up. Usually I make banana cakes or Deep fried Dumplings (Gulgule) when I find very ripe bananas lying in my kitchen. However this time I wanted to try something different so I decided to go with Banana Icecream. It was simple and easy to make, not to mention the difference in taste and price as compared to the store bought ones. These ice creams use fruit preserves hence taste synthetic and are non-nutritive. On the other hand the ones made at home have that natural taste of fruit like the one you enjoy in freshly prepared milk shakes. I am eagerly waiting for the mango season to make my next favorite ice cream. Continue reading »
Finally I made them! Thanks to my sister who baked cookies and inspired me to follow suit. My niece goes to this fun activity center called Hippocampus. Its a place where kids can read, learn and play at the same time. The center conducts cooking classes for kids from time to time - involving them in making simple things like sandwiches, muffins and cookies. Thats where I got this recipe from. I personally love the idea of involving kids in cooking as it encourages them to eat better and also serves as a good distraction for mommy and baby.
As you might have guessed by the name its a chocolate cake, in taste and appearance its a close cousin of the Deep Dark Chocolate Cake. The main difference being that Black Magic Cake contains a magic potion, coffee.
The procedure of making this cake is fairly simple. Since we dont use any butter there is not much beating, the baking soda and oil does the softening part for you. Only one thing you need to take care of, when you mix hot water to the egg mixture you need to whisk constantly else the eggs could scramble. The hot water combines with the eggs to result in a sticky kind of cake hence you really must wait for the cake to cool off before trying to demold it otherwise the cake could stick to the mold and detach.
I have so far found recipes from Hershey’s website fairly simple and with reliable results. I keep going back for more, I’m sure my doctor wont be very happy with this.

The Next Day …
As you can see I am totally going bonkers over chocolate and I cant stop baking. These Bikkies are really sinful and very heavy. If you eat a piece you’ll feel like you have been consumed by chocolate. Anyway, it started off with my hubby going away to office on a Saturday afternoon. Baby and I were wondering what to do since neither of us was feeling sleepy. As usual the solution was to bake a cake. I always ask her before starting “Mummy Cikki bana le?” where ‘Cikki’ is what stands for cake in her language. I usually get a yes for an answer. Then she takes her position on the kitchen platform and I get whisking!
By the time the Brownie Biscuit batter was ready baby became increasingly restless. She wanted to eat the dough straight out of the can. I kept trying to explain to her that this needs to go into the oven but she insisted. Then I tried to satisfy her chocolate craving with some toffees that were lying around in the kitchen. Again she went “Cikkkiiiiii” and then I knew I had to act fast. I Quickly threw the batter on the tray and just shoved it into the oven. Took her to bed and she slept peacefully. When I took the Cikki out of the oven I didnt like the shape. Naturally, given the pressure under which I put it in I had no time to do it properly. So I decided to use a cookie cutter to make the brownie bikkies look attractive.
Please note that this recipe of brownie biscuit gives a texture thats between the traditional brownie and the usual cookies. It uses more flour and less egg compared to Brownies. You can modify it as per the texture you want. If you like it more chewy take 2 eggs and lesser flour. Enjoy homemade brownie biscuits with hot chocolate sauce. If you want the sauce quick just heat chocolate syrup with butter.
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup light brown sugar
- Few drops of vanilla essence
- pinch of salt
- 1 egg
- 1 cup flour
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon soda
- Beat butter and both sugars till mixture becomes creamy.
- Sift flour, cocoa powder, salt and soda together.
- Add an egg into the butter mix and beat the mix.
- Slowly add the flour mix to the batter and mix well.
- Mix in a few drops of vanilla essence to the batter.
- Grease and dust a tray. Pour cake mix into the tray and bake in a preheated oven at 200 Deg C for 10 – 15 mins (take care not to burn!). Leave enough space between the biscuits while placing them on the oven sheet as they double up once they are done.
I have always been a huge fan of chocolates in any form right from truffles to cakes, icecreams to cookies and a Deep Dark Chocolate cake has the potential to satisfy any chocoholic’s craving.
Rich chocolate cakes are irresistible whether as a part of hot chocolate fudge or a black forest pastry. More than chocolate its the dark chocolate versions that I am fond of as I prefer chocolate bitter to sweet. If you share my taste and craze please try this out. I am sure you wont be disappointed. Whats more? Its really simple to make. You can find the recipe at the Hershey’s site. There was a point in time when I added boiling water to the batter and soon began to feel that the end of this cake was near! The batter became so thin and watery that I was wondering whether I should go ahead and bake it or not. Anyway, Hersheys is a trusted chocolate company for decades. The recipe said the batter will be thin so I just closed by eyes and went ahead. Once the cake was ready I opened my eyes and I couldnt believe what I saw! It looked gorgeous and tempting as ever. Its a must-try for chocoholics. Please follow the recipe of Deep Dark Chocolate cake by Hersheys.
Some changes I made to the recipe :
1) I added 1 teaspoon of baking powder and baking soda each.
2) I used 1.5 cups of brown sugar instead of 2 cups of plain sugar.
This is my 100th recipe and I could think of no other dish that is closer to my heart than this one. Here comes the century! More than the recipes I am so happy about the number of friends I have made on this journey. I have learnt a whole lot from you guys. Thanks so much for being with me and inspiring me with your recipes in my Space.
