EK Supermarket is a place close to my house. I visit it every Sunday evening to get the week’s groceries. The management of the store changed in April 2012. Here is a glimpse of the famous Mavalli Tiffin Rooms located in Bangalore. They are known world-wide by the name of MTR. I think MTR is the one brand that everybody relates to when it comes to South Indian cuisine. Though its touched heights in the restaurant popularity chart and has also reached international markets with its instant mixes, MTR still continues to wear a simple, humble look that it had decades ago. I have not seen anything really change in the infrastructure of the restaurant since I was a little kid. Even the elderly gentleman who shouts out our name when its our turn, looks exactly the same. He still sits on a wooden stool guarding the entrance to the family hall. Continue reading

I love anything with the word ‘chocolate’ in it. I am always hungry for chocolate and keep looking for ways in which I can add some to my ‘diet’. While surfing around the net I found this easy recipe to bake brownies by Nags. I couldn’t wait much longer to try it out. This is our Sunday lunch and believe me its not a typical one. Usually on Sundays, its just simple dal-rice or vegetable pulao for lunch and at night its noodles. Our system is accustomed to this diet. This Sunday however, we enjoyed a North Indian Spread which I am sending to Srivalli’s Indian Thali Mela. Its been Mayank’s dream to own a jazz, for over a year now. I remember the first time we saw the Ad on TV. Mayank jumped out of his seat, ‘Its here!’ I could sense the excitement in his voice but didn’t know back then that he was serious. He wanted one of those cars which don’t fall in the value-for-money category of cars. However, as time passed I realized he had given his heart to the Honda car. While we drove around town on familiar roads, he knew the exact spots where a jazz would be parked. In the midst of a traffic jam he would spot his jazz and feel better. Sometimes I would tease him saying that he would not overtake a jazz out of sheer respect for the car 🙂 Continue reading

Now I know why this cake is called Devil’s Food Cake. It’s simply sinful ! It’s made with a combination of rich molten chocolate and butter. The taste of this cake is determined by the quality of cooking chocolate used. It can be as delicious as you like. I suggest, you go for the best brand of dark chocolate available near your place. On Friday, late at night around 11.30 pm, I published my eBook on Baby food recipes. The book is hosted by amazon and is available for a short preview on their site.
Writing this book has been a long journey. I started more than 4 years ago when I introduced Raina (older daughter) to solids. The book was set aside only to be taken out 3 years later when I had Trisha. This time I thought I should document the information well and release it so all moms, like me, could benefit from it. India is filled with so many different versions of rice cooked with vegetables. There is one called tairi in UP which is more like a pulao. Its rice infused with vegetables and cooked without any spicy ground paste. Then there is kashmiri pulao which contains sweet elements like pomegranate seeds and kesar milk. Finally the well-known Hyderabadi Dum Biryani which is heavy due to the addition of curds and spices. In South India, we have masala bhath which also contains the known elements of pulao along with freshly ground coconut. Continue reading
